NDP accusing premier of ‘coverup’ over alleged emails to prosecutors

Jan 23, 2023 | 7:41 PM

The government of Premier Danielle Smith is being accused of conducting a “coverup” after a staffer in her office was alleged to have sent emails to prosecutors trying to influence the handling of cases tied to the Coutts border blockade last year.

The Opposition NDP made the accusation after the government said it could not find any emails in a comprehensive review over the weekend of allegations reported last week by CBC.

The Justice Department says civil servants reviewed almost one-million incoming, outgoing and deleted emails spanning a four-month period and there will be no further investigation unless other evidence surfaces.

But New Democrat Rakhi Pancholi says the investigation did not talk to anyone involved and its parameters were narrow – and she has renewed her call for a full independent investigation.
