She says she wanted to live somewhere where it is hot.

Grande Prairie Piranhas swimmer Jordan Greber has earned a scholarship to Arizona State University.

Greber says she talked to a lot of schools before making a decision.

“One thing that I like, that is really appealing to me about Arizona State is coach Bob Bowman. That’s Michael Phelps’s coach and that was cool because I got to have a conversation when I went down to visit with him.”

Phelps won 28 Olympic medals, 23 of them gold. in his career.

Greber says Arizona State also has an outdoor pool. She says she spends 20 hours a week in the pool and to “do it all outside would be just amazing.”

Greber says she plans to study kinesiology and plans to become a physiotherapist.

Greber is the second Piranhas swimmer in recent memory to earn a scholarship at a US school after Catherine Minic landed at the University of Indiana.

Greber says that inspired her to do the same.

“At big meets, like NCAAs and stuff, we’ll be able to see each other and be closer when I move down. That’s going to be really cool. She’s my best friend. I miss her.”

The Grade 11 student at St. John Paul II Catholic School will start university in the fall of 2024.

Piranhas’ athletes have been winning medals and going to international level competitions in recent times.

Greber credits coach Alex Dawson for the club’s success.

“He’s just made such a difference overall. I definitely think it’s the coach. He has definitely gotten me where I am today. I could not have done it without him and his support.”

Greber says she wanted to find a coach as good as Dawson when she picked a university.

She says she will be in Toronto from March 28 to April 2 for the Canadian Swimming Trials, something that can lead to traveling to high-end meets.

Her next competition is the Edmonton Open from February 3 to 5.
