Vehicle Safety

Alberta RCMP taking action with Operation Cold Start this week

Jan 30, 2023 | 7:44 AM

RCMP across the province are reminding residents about the dangers of leaving their vehicle unattended or unlocked, with the keys nearby or in the ignition.

They say around 50 per cent of vehicle thefts in Alberta are vehicles that were left idling, adding that this happens year round, and not just during the colder winter months.

This week from January 30 to February 3 is Operation Cold Start, where police will be patrolling looking for unattended, idling vehicles and checking to see if they are locked and/or have keys in the ignition.

Officers will work to educate owners on the various ways they may keep their property safe.
