Joint effort targeting repeat offenders leads to two arrests

Feb 1, 2023 | 5:18 PM

Grande Prairie RCMP says a joint operation between several branches of the police that targeted repeat offenders that flee from traffic stops has resulted in two arrests.

On Sunday, police tried to do a traffic stop at 100 Avenue and 96 Street on a vehicle Mounties believed had been stolen earlier in the day.

The vehicle took off, but RCMP did not give chase on the ground.

Air services tracked the vehicle instead and, once the vehicle stopped and the people inside got out, gave directions to officers on the ground who found and arrested two men.

Thirty-nine-year-old Richard Jason Fabbi of Stony Plain is facing a long list of charges that includes:

· Flight from police

· Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle

· Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000

· Resist arrest

· Obstructing a peace officer

· Operate motor vehicle while prohibited x 4

· Fail to comply with release order x 4

· Possession of break instruments

· Fail to comply with a probation order

· Possession of stolen identification x 2

· Possession of a controlled substance (Methamphetamine) for the purpose of trafficking

· Operate motor vehicle without insurance

He has been remanded and is due in court on February 8.

Twenty-eight-year-old Reece Mackenzie Babik of Edmonton has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and failure to comply with a probation order.

He has been released and is due in court on February 27.
