Hockey weekend recap: Athletic’s wrap up regular season, Storm win one, seven games in NWJHL

NPHL

The Grande Prairie Athletics lost to the Spirit River Rangers in their last game of the regular season Sunday night, falling to the Rangers 5-4 in overtime.

Grande Prairie wrapped up the regular season in second place behind the Dawson Creek Canucks.

The A’s will face the Rangers in the first round of playoffs, in a best-of-seven series starting Tuesday night at the Design Works Centre.

Puck-drop is 8:30 p.m.

AJHL

The Grande Prairie Storm hosted the Fort McMurray Oil Barons this past weekend.

The Storm split the series taking Friday’s match-up, 2-1. but dropping the Saturday game 5-1.

The Storm’s next game is tomorrow in Whitecourt against the Wolverines.

Puck drop is 7:00 p.m.

NWJHL

Seven games were played in the North West Junior Hockey League over the weekend.

On Friday:

  • The County Wheat Kings fell short to the Fort St John Huskies in overtime 4-3.
  • The Dawson Creek Kodiaks blew past the Fairview Flyers winning 8-1.

On Saturday:

  • The Sexsmith Vipers came out on top against the North Peace Navigators, winning 4-3 in overtime.
  • Fort St John beat Dawson Creek in a high-scoring game, with a final tally of 8-6.
  • The La Crete Lumber Barons won 5-2 against the Beaverlodge Blades.

On Sunday:

  • The Wheat Kings prevailed, winning 4-1 against Sexsmith in a matinee.
  • La Crete and Beaverlodge played the second half of a back-to-back with the Lumber Barons sweeping the weekend, winning 4-3 in overtime.

The next games are on Friday, February 10; with the County of GP at Fairview, Fort St John at Sexsmith, and Dawson Creek at Peace River.

All games start at 8:00 p.m.
