First ever theatre conference coming to Grande Prairie region

Feb 8, 2023 | 12:08 PM

The Grande Prairie region is set to play host to the Great Canadian Playwright Showcase.

Set for May 9-12, it is a networking conference for anyone across the country that is involved in theatre, according to event host and producer Jen England.

“It is for community theatre people, dinner theatre people, professional theatre people, people who are studying theatre in school, at college, university.”

“Anybody who is involved in theatre should be at this networking conference.”

England expects around 100 delegates from across the country to attend the event.

The event is a first of its kind, and England says they have lined up two impressive headline presenters.

“Kelly Robinson, who is the director of new play development at Mirvish Productions, which is the Broadway of Canada. They own several theatres and they do a lot of productions in conjunction with other theatres. ”

“Our other headliner is Keith Barker, who is the director o new play development with the Stratford Festival.”

England adds there will be plenty of workshops and networking opportunities during the event.”

She says there will also be opportunities for playwrights to showcase portions of their work to the delegates and other key theatre stakeholders.

“It will be the best 10-minute scene of each play. So there will be four (plays) in a row, and then a break before another four shows in a row. It is impossible not to see good entertainment for two hours this way.”

England adds they are also looking for local talent to bring these short play samples to life on stage.
