Premier Smith presses PM on ‘Just Transition’ plan

Feb 8, 2023 | 10:19 AM

In Ottawa for talks on health care between provincial leaders and the federal government, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also took the opportunity to discuss the proposed “Just Transition” legislation with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

According to a readout from the province, Smith and Trudeau met for about 30 minutes, where she asked the federal government to halt to proposed legislation and instead work with the province.

Smith wants the two levels of government to work together to attract investment and workers to Alberta’s conventional, non-conventional and emerging energy sectors while also reducing Canada’s and Alberta’s net emissions.

The readout says the prime minister expressed a willingness to explore this strategy.

Smith also used the discussion to outline the province’s expectations about future federal policies related to Alberta’s energy sector, including abandoning references to “just transition,” increased workforce training in all energy sectors and a substantial increase in LNG exports to Asia.

In a separate update Smith says she met with the premiers of Saskatchewan and Quebec to discuss the energy sector, health care and federal overreach.
