Alberta Justice official says politicians should never contact prosecutors directly
EDMONTON – The top civil servant in Alberta Justice says there are no formal rules stopping politicians from directly interfering in court prosecutions.
But Frank Bosscha says his department relies on prosecutors knowing the boundaries and pushing back if it happens.
Bosscha made the comments in response to questions from the Opposition NDP at a committee hearing.
The NDP is calling for a review of conversations Premier Danielle Smith had with Bosscha and Justice Minister Tyler Shandro to resolve outstanding questions on whether Smith interfered in the prosecution of COVID-related court cases.
