Feb 15, 2023 | 4:19 PM

The Grant Berg Art Gallery is once again hosting Pattison Media’s Beauty of the Peace Art Competition, with submissions opening tomorrow. (Thursday, February 16.)

This contest dates back over 20 years and many of the region’s top artists have competed in or won.

Originating from CJXX, which is now Big Country, the art competition has now expanded to Pattison Media, after the Grant Berg Gallery rejuvenated the contest five years ago, following a few years’ hiatus.

Owner of the Gallery, Grant Berg says it was important for him to bring this back to the Peace, as it is a less traditional art contest and gives him the ability to keep tabs on local artists to watch their skills grow and develop.

” The Beauty of the Peace has been around for 20 years, started initially with CJXX/Big Country and it’s expanded, it did take a couple of years hiatus and when I opened my gallery I wanted to bring it back, I was always a fan of it, I love seeing the talent here in the region and it’s a chance to showcase them.”

Berg adds, to him, it’s less about who wins, but seeing people’s abilities grow, and allowing him the chance to give talented Peace region artists, a platform they wouldn’t usually have access to.

” What I do is I create opportunity for artists, well we take the winner every year and we carry their work for at least a year, but it also gives me a chance to see who’s growing and developing, and as I mentioned Elizabeth Hutchison is one of our top artists now and she never won it, (Beauty of The Peace Art Competition)but she was consistently in there and I could see her work grow and develop and the leaps and bounds.”

Recently, Hutchison went on to take first place at the Canadian Federation of Artists in Vancouver.

Berg did want to clarify a misconception that has come up in the past.

” People assume it’s a landscape competition because it’s called ‘Beauty of the Peace,’ and I always stress, it’s whatever you find beauty in is what I want to see, and from that, we do see some abstract and few different styles of art, but we do see that range, upcoming artists 18 to 25, and we do see some submissions from seniors as well, and that’s amazing, I just love seeing that.”

To enter the competition, there are a few requirements:

  • Entries will be accepted at Grant Berg Gallery #102, 9909 102nd Street Grande Prairie.
  • Absolutely no work will be accepted after the deadline.
  • The artist must be 18 years of age or over and not currently represented by a professional gallery in the Peace Region.
  • Works must be picked up by end of the day April 10, 2023.
