Skrlik, Team Alberta play Lawes in first draw at Scotties Tournament of Hearts

Feb 17, 2023 | 6:00 AM

The Scotties Tournament of Hearts starts tonight in Kamloops.

The first draw at 7 p.m. Alberta time will have Team Alberta, skipped by Kayla Skrlik, up against Wild Card #1, skipped by Kaitlyn Lawes.

Skrlik says teammates Brittany Tran and Geri-Lynn Ramsay have previous Scotties experience.

“Geri and Brittany are very, very well prepared to go back on TV. Brittany’s been, this will be her third Scotties. This will be Geri’s second and she had a great run at her first.”

“(We are) just leaning on that support and letting them guide Ashton (Skrlik, lead) and I through it will be a big help.”

Ramsey was with the team from Prince Edward Island that was runner-up in the 2010 Scotties. PEI and Alberta are in the same pool this year.

Other rinks in the same pool as Alberta include Kerri Einarson’s – Team Canada, BC, and Saskatchewan.

Laura Walker is filling in at the third for the Lawes team while regular third Selena Njegovan is away on pregnancy leave.

Skrlik says her mom and dad will make the trip from Nampa to cheer her on.

“My boyfriend’s family will also be coming down and then we’ll see who else. I think I have quite a few members of my family coming to cheer us on, so it’ll be good. We’ll have quite the support system.”

Alberta will play Saskatchewan at 7 p.m. Saturday night, then have Sunday off before playing Nunavut at 9:30 a.m. and Quebec at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
