NWJHL Playoffs begin, Athletic’s hope to advance to Round 2, Storm looking for a win

NWJHL Playoffs begin Tuesday

The North West Junior Hockey League wrapped up it’s regular season over the weekend.

On Friday:

  • The Fort St John Huskies beat the Dawson Creek Kodiaks 4-1,
  • The County Wheat Kings blew the La Crete Lumber Barons out of the water, winning 10-4,
  • The Sexsmith Vipers won at home against the North Peace Navigators, 7-2,
  • The Fairview Flyers lost to the Beaverlodge Blades 6-2.

On Saturday:

  • Fort St John and La Crete went into overtime, with the Huskies coming out on top 6-5,
  • The Wheat Kings for the second time in one weekend had a ‘point-night’, winning 13-4 against the Flyers,
  • The Navs hosted the Blades and won 5-4 in overtime.

On Sunday, the last game of the regular season went to a shootout, with the Vipers winning 3-2 against the Lumber Barons.

The first round of playoffs begins Tuesday night, with the second-seed, Wheat Kings, and seventh-seed Blades, Game 1 will be at the Crosslink County Sportsplex at 8:00 p.m.

The two other series have the sixth seed Navigators and third seed Vipers Game 1 on Wednesday in Sexsmith, and the fifth seed Lumber Barons and fourth seed Kodiaks Game 1 in Dawson Creek on Wednesday.

Athletics play Game 7 looking to advance to Round 2

The Grande Prairie Athletics of the North Peace Hockey League played Saturday night in Spirit River against the Rangers, where they lost to the hometown team 4-1 and were able to push the series to Game 7.

The A’s will host the Rangers tonight at the Design Works Center with a 8:30 p.m. start time for the series deciding match-up.

The winner of the game will advance to round 2 of the NPHL playoffs starting Thursday against the Dawson Creek Canucks.

Storm on two-game losing streak

The Grande Prairie Storm was on the road over the Family Day weekend.

Their first stop was in Sherwood Park against the Crusaders on Sunday, where they lost in a shutout game, 4-0.

On Family Day Monday, the team traveled to Lloydminster and lost in another shutout game with a final of 4-0.

The Storm will be in Bonnyville tonight to take on the Pontiacs at 7:00 p.m.

Bonnett’s Energy Centre will be where the action is this coming weekend, with the Storm hosting the Drayton Valley Thunder Friday and Saturday.
