Federal, provincial money announced for Grande Prairie, Paddle Prairie housing projects

Feb 24, 2023 | 6:00 AM

The federal and provincial governments have announced $14 million in joint funding for 55 new affordable housing units in Alberta.

A release from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says the units will be for “Indigenous and Metis elders, families and communities in Alberta.”

Two projects are in northwestern Alberta.

The Woodland Cree First Nation is getting money for six rental units for Indigenous elders, families, and individuals in Grande Prairie.

City council voted at its October 31, 2022 meeting to make some land on 105 Avenue near 100 Street marketable and to sell it to the Woodland Cree Nation for $340,000. The city had been looking at putting a supportive care project there but decided not to once the Coordinated Care Campus meant it was no longer needed.

Paddle Prairie is getting money for nine rental units for Metis families.

“Affordable housing is a critical support for many Albertans. It is important to ensure that the housing we provide is able to meet the needs of the families and individuals who live there. With continued partnership with Indigenous leaders and organizations, we are helping create better opportunities for housing in the communities across the province,” says Alberta Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services Jeremy Nixon in that same release from CMHC.

Other projects have been announced for Medicine Hat, Edmonton, and Fort Chipewyan.
