Wheat Kings advance in NWJHL playoffs, division finals continue in NPHL

The County of Grande Prairie Wheat Kings joined the Fort St John Huskies in the semi final round of the NWJHL playoffs on Saturday night.

Adam Morrow had a goal and two assists while Alex Beardmore and Jaydon Gordey both added a goal and an assist as the Wheat Kings beat Beaverlodge 4-1 to complete a three game sweep.

Carter Berg also scored for the Wheat Kings while Josh Juckes replied for the Blades.

The Wheat Kings will now wait and see who they will face in the league semi final

Sexsmith is up two games to one on North Peace, with game four of their series set for Monday night in Peace River.

The other series between La Crete and Dawson Creek is going to a fifth and deciding game on Wednesday night in Dawson Creek.

NPHL

Dolan Bjornson’s goal at the 9:22 mark of overtime gave the Dawson Creek Canucks a 4-3 win over Spirit River on Saturday night, tying up thir NPHL West division final at one win each.

Brandon Rowley and Alex Hanson also scored for the Canucks, who held a 3-1, third period lead before Madisson Smiley and Ty Mappin scored in the final three minutes for the Rangers to force extra time.

Mappin’s goal came with just two seconds left in regulation time.

Fred Tanguay also scored for the Rangers.

Meanwhile, Cruz Cote scored twice including the winner early in the third as the Falher Pirates edged the Manning Comets 5-4 to take a 2-0 lead in the East division final.

Neil Maisonneuve, Rob Lemay and Denis Rochon also scored for the Pirates, who jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first period.

Wyatt Noskey with a pair, Isaiah Letendre and Brendan Baumgartner replied for the hometown Comets.

Game three in both series will go on Tuesday night in Dawson Creek and Falher.

AJHL

Grande Prairie Storm split their two home games with Drayton Valley over the weekend, falling 8-4 on Friday before bouncing back with a 4-3 shoot-out win on Saturday.

They return to action Tuesday night when they host Whitecourt in a potential preview of the opening round of the AJHL playoffs.

Puck drop is 7 pm at Bonnett’s Energy Centre.
