Feb 27, 2023 | 12:10 PM

A multi-vehicle collision on Highway 40 that claimed a life Sunday morning has been cleared and re-opened to traffic flow after becoming impassable for nearly 12 hours.

It happened between Township Road 690 and 700 and the investigation revealed at approximately 7:00 a.m., a northbound log truck crossed the center line and collided with a southbound semi-truck. The southbound semi then struck an SUV.

The log truck kept traveling and hit another semi-truck and the logs split across the highway.

A southbound pickup was unable to avoid the logs and drove into the ditch. Two additional northbound vehicles ended up in the ditch as a result of avoiding the collision as well.

The lone occupant of the log truck; a 59-year-old man from Grande Prairie was pronounced dead at the scene and several others involved in the collision were also injured and attended or were transported to hospital. One person was airlifted to an Edmonton hospital via STARS Air Ambulance in serious condition.

The Grande Prairie RCMP along with the assistance of RCMP Collision Reconstructionist continue to investigation the collision and send their condolences to the families and loved ones involved in this incident.
