County Council highlights: February 27

Feb 28, 2023 | 1:18 PM

The County of Grande Prairie Council met on Monday.

Among the highlights of their meeting were:

  • Council approved the appointment of this year’s fire guardians. Fire guardians assist the county in issuing permits during fire season, which starts March 1, as well as educating and informing residents on safe burning practices. Fire guardians can be reached by clicking here.
  • Council also approved the Lake Saskatoon Hall location to FCSS Parent and Tot programming, twice monthly, at $3,500 per year. Since November 2022, the location has been used as a trial, and attendance has been showing well. Locations in Hythe, Bezanson, and Clairmont are also offering the programs.
  • Council approved a request from STARS Foundation for an event to be held at Pipestone Creek campground on May 25. The venue will hold the 2023 Rescue in the North fundraiser, which has historically been in larger urban centers in the province, but will be showcasing the challenges of operating in the northern region of Alberta.
  • A third reading of the West Grande Prairie Solid Waste Authority Bylaw was given. The bylaw states the joint authority between the County and surrounding participating municipalities maintains, controls, and manages a regional solid waste landfill system in West County. The authority’s representation and agreements needed to be modified to reflect the change following the dissolution of Hythe into the County in July 2021.
  • A $200,000 funding request was also approved to complete the County’s Enterprise Resource Planning Unit 4 project implementation.
