Emergency Alert test to be heard throughout Alberta

ALBERTA – The province will be issuing a test for the Alberta Emergency Alert system on Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

Albertan’s can expect to hear and see the alert at 1:55 p.m., through TVs, radio stations, websites, social media, the Alberta Emergency Alert mobile app, and directly to compatible cell phones.

The distinctive Alert Ready tone will ring across the province in unison on Wednesday, but for those who are deaf or hard of hearing, alternative formats will be displayed via text or graphics.

Alberta Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis said, “While test alerts are issued nationwide twice a year in May and November, this year’s emergency alert in Alberta is being done now to coincide with the official start of wildfire season on March 1.”

“Tests help us fix any system issues to ensure alerts work when we need them,” continued Ellis. “Tests also provide a valuable opportunity for Albertans to consider their own readiness to respond to an unexpected event like a wildfire.”

When an actual emergency is in effect, the Alberta Government indicates that having an emergency plan in place can help individuals navigate a potentially stressful situation.

Albertans are encouraged to know the risks within their community and take proper precautions and actions prior to an emergency.

Building an emergency kit or grab-and-go bag, having the proper insurance, or building relationships with your neighbours are some of the tips the province recommends to help in any situation.

Ellis said, “Since Alberta created the first emergency alert system in the country more than 30 years ago, the province has issued alerts to provide critical information about an immediate disaster, where it’s happening and what actions to take to stay safe.”

He added, “Our top priority is saving lives and protecting Albertans. That’s why I encourage you to download the Alberta Emergency Alert app to receive messages about life-threatening emergencies, such as tornadoes, wildfires, floods or Amber Alerts, directly to your cell phones. When faced with an emergency, always follow instructions from authorities and check for updated alerts.”
