Oilers captain Connor McDavid named NHL’s first star for February

NEW YORK — Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is the NHL’s first star for the month of February.

Colorado Avalanche centre Nathan MacKinnon earned second star honours and Boston Bruins goaltender Linus Ullmark garnered third-star honours.

McDavid, who began February by participating in his sixth all-star game, led the NHL in assists (14), points (23), shots on goal (63) and power-play points (eight) across 11 games.

He also shared second place in goals with nine, including scoring his 50th of the season on Monday, and led all forwards in average time on ice (23:41).

MacKinnon, who played in his fourth all-star game, tied for second in the league in points per game (1.70) and placed third overall with 17 points in 10 contests.

Ullmark, who helped the Atlantic Division capture a championship in his all-star game debut, posted a flawless month, going 6-0-0 with a 1.79 goals-against average and .947 save percentage. He also became the 13th goalie in NHL history to score a regular-season goal.
