1500 educators gathering in Grande Prairie for the Mighty Peace Teachers’ Convention

Mar 8, 2023 | 4:24 PM

Around 1500 educators from across northwestern Alberta will be in Grande Prairie for the Mighty Peace Teachers’ Convention.

It will run Thursday and Friday at Charles Spencer and St. Joe’s high schools.

President Jodie Dell says this will be the first in-person version since the pandemic.

“I think we’re pretty excited because we’re at a new venue so we’re trying out some new schools and just doing things a little bit different.”

“Coming back in person with a new venue, I think, keeps things exciting and people are ready to be back in person and learn some professional development.”

Dell says the convention moved partly because the old Comp is now closed and the convention board wanted to stay with schools that were close to each other.

They also hold sessions in the Eastlink Centre.

Dell outlines some of the things that will be going on at the convention.

“We have some great keynotes lined up, so everyone will be able to join us in the St. Joe’s gym to be able to listen to various speakers on different topics.”

“We have around 200 sessions varying from curriculum to mental health to dealing with immigrants now in the classroom.”

Keynote speakers include Matt Miller, author of the book Ditch the Textbook and author and storyteller Ivan Coyote.

Dell says the goal of the convention is for the teachers to learn something.

“The teachers are able to find something that is of interest to them that’s going to help them in their classroom.”

Dell says it looks like organizers lucked out with the weather this year and it will be a good time for teachers to drive into Grande Prairie for the convention.
