Court update: Trial ordered in murder case, sentencing after drugs and weapons seizure

Mar 8, 2023 | 6:00 AM

Accused in murder ordered to stand trial.

Alberta Justice says a man charged after a murder in High Prairie has been ordered to stand trial after a preliminary hearing.

Tyler Myles Melnyk was ordered to stand trial on charges of murder and forcible confinement March 1 in High Prairie court.

Melnyk was charged after the death of a 35-year-old man on November 19, 2021, at a home on Sucker Creek First Nation.

Melnyk, who is from High Prairie, was charged the same day.

Trial dates have not been set.

Sentence given after 2019 drug and weapons arrest.

Alberta Justice says one of the people charged after a drug and weapons seizure in Grande Prairie in 2019 has been sentenced.

Marisa Starr Lalonde of Peace River was given a 20-month Conditional Sentence Order on February 28 in Grande Prairie court after earlier pleading guilty to two charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and one of making, possessing, transferring, selling or trying to sell an identity document. These sentences are served in the community, not in jail.

Lalonde was arrested near Sexsmith early in the morning of December 5, 2019.

RCMP said at the time they got a call from someone who said they spotted an unfamiliar car with two people inside at the end of their driveway.

One of the people asked for help because the car was stuck, which prompted the caller to think something was suspicious.

Police found the car stuck in a ditch. They later seized methamphetamine, cocaine, cannabis, a loaded shotgun, ammunition, and brass knuckles.

All charges against the second person charged, Kevin McCrea of Peace River, were withdrawn in March of 2020. He had been facing a pair of weapons charges and four more of failure to comply.
