Local hockey round-up: Storm start playoffs, NPHL, NWJHL, locals in the ACAC playoffs

The Storm opens the Alberta Junior Hockey League Playoffs tonight in Whitecourt.

The Wolverines were second in the North Division this year with 77 points, Grande Prairie was seventh with 46.

Game 2 will be played tomorrow in Whitecourt with Game 3 in Grande Prairie Tuesday.

The face-off time for those games will be 7 PM.

NPHL

Dawson Creek has advanced to the North Peace Hockey League final.

The Canucks edged Spirit River 2-1 last night to take the West Division final in seven games. All seven were decided by one goal with Games 2 through 5 being decided in overtime.

Dawson Creek will host Falher in Game 1 of the league final tomorrow. Face-off at 8:30.

The Pirates swept Manning to the East Division final.

NWJHL

The County Wheat Kings beat Sexsmith 3-2 last night to complete a sweep of their Northwest Junior Hockey League semi-final series.

Fort St. John is up 3-0 heading into Game 4 Friday night in Dawson Creek.

Game 5, if needed, would be played back in Fort St. John Saturday.

Face-off times are 8 PM.

ACAC

The women’s hockey semi-finals will be played this weekend in the Alberta College Athletics Conference and four players from the Peace are involved.

Olds College is playing NAIT.

Char Sallis of Grande Prairie is with the Ooks.

Lakeland is facing Red Deer Polytechnic.

Paige Budgell and Kaitlyn Sandul of Grande Prairie are both with Olds.

Jailyn Bablitz of Valleyview and Arilyn Toews of Wembley are both on Red Deer’s team.

Games will be played Friday, Saturday and, if necessary, Sunday.

The winners will meet in the league final starting March 17.

On the men’s side, NAIT is playing Augustana and Concordia University of Edmonton is playing Red Deer in the semi-finals They follow the same schedule as the women.

Grande Prairie’s Austin Schellenberg is with Concordia.

NAIT advanced by eliminating Briercrest College in the opening round last weekend.

Briercrest has Trey Doell of Grande Prairie and Jeridyn Loewen of Fort St. John on its roster.
