Alberta outlines education funding to train 3,400 more health-care workers

Mar 13, 2023 | 6:18 PM

EDMONTON – Alberta has promised $200 million in funding for post-secondary health-care programs as a part of its latest budget.

Health Minister Jason Copping says the funding, announced in last month’s budget, would help train an additional 3,400 health-care professionals.

He says $113 million of the money would be spent over three years to fund at least 100 medical residency positions.

The minister says it is a part of a long-term plan, while leveraging a qualified immigrant workforce in the short run.

Copping says the funding would help expand training for doctors in regional centres and rural communities.

It would also support 30 international medical graduates to secure residency positions in Alberta for further training.

David Shepherd, Alberta NDP Health Critic, made the following statement in response:

“Additional funding for medical schools is fundamentally important, but today’s announcement does not address that residency positions are going unfilled under the UCP leadership.

“The UCP’s war on doctors drove many out of the province, increasing the workload and pressure for the doctors still here, and have made careers in practising medicine far less stable and predictable. Prospective medical students see this chaos and question their future in Alberta.

“An Alberta NDP government will deliver better healthcare to Albertans by working in partnership with healthcare workers who have experienced the most challenging years of their career and with new students so they see a bright future in Alberta.”
