Sentencing in drug case

Alberta Justice says another of the several people charged in a 2020 drug arrest has been sentenced.

Kevin Bey was given a 26-month sentence on March 8 after earlier pleading guilty to charges of trafficking a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

He was one of several people charged after an ALERT operation called Project Incumbent that ended with the final arrests in September of 2020.

ALERT said at the time they had targeted a regional cocaine network.

Searches of three Grande Prairie homes turned up $260,000 in cash and drugs, including cocaine, synthetic cannabis, and GHB.

Three other people were previously given Conditional Sentence Orders ranging from 18 months to two years.

Another accused, Taylor Edgren, had his charges withdrawn February 27, 2023.

Time served sentence given after Grimshaw drug arrest

Alberta Justice says a Grimshaw man has been sentenced to 462 days time served in jail after a 2021 arrest.

Clifford William Carifelle pleaded guilty to charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and assaulting a peace officer on February 28 in Peace River court, the day his trial was supposed to start.

He was charged after an incident on August 25, 2021.

RCMP said at the time that members on patrol saw a motorcycle cut across their path near Highway 2 and 50 Avenue in Grimshaw.

The driver took off when police tried to pull over the motorcycle.

The bike stalled a short time later and the man driving threw the bike and his helmet at officers approaching on foot before running away.

He tried to hide under a deck at a nearby home but was arrested.

Police seized several things, including a knife and methamphetamine.

Two trial dates set for Grande Prairie man

Alberta Justice says a pair of trial dates for late this year have been for a Grande Prairie man.

The first trial for John Wolitski is scheduled for November 21, 2023, in relation to an August 12, 2021 arrest at a rural location.

RCMP said at the time they thought they saw someone not following the conditions of a release order.

They ended up seizing crystal meth, fentanyl, crack, oxycontin, three guns, a pocketknife, and other items.

The second trial is set for December 5, 2023, in related to the arrest of two men after police located two stolen vehicles at a gas station in Wembley on October 11, 2022.

They were arrested after trying to run away.

Co-accused Dwayne Olson is due back in court March 27.

Trial date set for company charged under Scrap Metal Act

Alberta Justice says a trial date has been set for a Grande Prairie company accused of failing to comply with the Scrap Metal Act.

The trial for H&W Metals and Salvage is set for November 22, 2023.

The charges were laid by Grande Prairie RCMP on November 10, 2022.

RCMP said at the time they were running a project regarding metal recyclers in an effort to reduce metal theft.

This act requires these companies to follow certain duties when buying scrap metal.
