U Sports hockey and volleyball championships this weekend, Peace Region athletes chasing national titles

HOCKEY UPDATE:

Two third period goals gave the Mount Royal University Cougars a 3-2 win over the University of Toronto to open the U Sports Women’s Hockey Championship.

Mount Royal had trailed 2-1 going into the final period.

Grande Prairie’s Athena Hauck had an assist on the tying and winning goals.

The Cougars had gone in ranked eighth, Toronto first.

Mount Royal now plays the winner in today’s game between the University of Montreal and the University of New Brunswick in the semi-finals Saturday afternoon.

The champions of Canadian university hockey and volleyball are being decided this weekend and some athletes from the Peace are in the national title chase.

The men’s hockey championship starts Thursday in Charlottetown, but two teams from Alberta will play their first games Friday.

The University of Alberta will play Windsor Friday morning at 9 a.m. Alberta time. The Golden Bears roster includes Cam Wiebe from Fairview and Wyatt McLeod from Dawson Creek. Fairview’s Rachel Wiebe is an assistant coach with the Golden Bears.

The Wiebe’s are brother and sister.

The University of Calgary will play UPEI in its first game at 4 p.m. Alberta time Friday. Peace River’s Carter Massier is with the Dinos.

The women’s hockey champion will be decided in Montreal.

Mount Royal University plays the top-ranked University of Toronto at 1 p.m. Alberta time Thursday.

Athena Hauck from Grande Prairie and Tianna Yaremko of Spirit River are with the MRU Cougars.

Volleyball

The women’s volleyball championship starts Friday in Vancouver.

Mount Royal plays the University of Manitoba at 9 p.m. Alberta time.

Wanham’s Quinn Pelland is with the Cougars. She was also with the team last year when it won silver, its first-ever national medal (see picture below).
