Staff shortages result in reduced drop-in times at Eastlink Centre pool

Mar 17, 2023 | 12:52 PM

Starting March 18, the Eastlink Centre will be cutting back some of its public drop-in swim times due to a lack of lifeguards.

Moving forward, public drop-in swimming will no longer be offered Saturdays and Sundays from 8 am to 1 pm, and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12-4 pm.

Beginning March 26, the pool will also close at 6 pm on the last Sunday of every month to allow staff the opportunity to take part in and complete required safety training.

Swimming lessons and pre-existing bookings will continue to run as scheduled.

The city says the changes will ensure guest safety remains a top priority, and that required aquatics ratios are maintained.

CKC General Manager Angela Redding said in a news release that they are working towards combating the staff shortages at the pool.

They have hired 10 new aquatics staff since March 1, and are offering lifeguard certification courses and a new hire incentive package.
