EDMONTON, AB – Alberta Health Services (AHS) has announced its new president and CEO.

Mauro Chies has been in the role on an interim basis since April 4, 2022, and will continue to lead the health services agency in a permanent capacity.

Chies said in a news release that he is extremely pleased to be given this opportunity.

“It is a source of pride and a great privilege to work alongside [AHS Official Administrator] Dr. Cowell and the Advisory Board, our dedicated executive leadership team and our incredible staff, physicians, and volunteers, all of whom are committed to providing exceptional healthcare to the people of this province,” said Chies. “Under Dr. Cowell’s strategic direction and with his support, we will continue to move forward on the changes that ensure improved healthcare experiences for all Albertans.”

Chies kicked off his career in healthcare in 2009 with the Capital Health Region. He has held a variety of executive leadership roles in the years that followed, including board chair of Alberta Precision Laboratories, vice president of Cancer Care Alberta & Clinical Support Services, and senior operating officer of Diagnostic Imaging Services.

In a statement from AHS, the organization said that Chies has gained the respect and confidence of its employees, partners, subsidiaries, and many external stakeholders.

Cowell said he is delighted to learn that Chies has been announced as the permanent president and CEO.

“Having worked closely with him these past few months, I know we have a shared vision and focus on the major improvements to our healthcare system that make the most significant difference to the people of Alberta,” said Cowell.

Cowell adds, “In combination with his extensive experience, Mauro also brings a desire to drive innovation and change that will help employees and all Albertans experience a healthcare system that is more accessible, effective, efficient, and accountable – advanced by an organizational culture built on safety and trust. He has my full support and I look forward to continuing to work alongside him as we make measurable progress.”

According to AHS, several national and international candidates were up for consideration for the position.
