Peace Region locals gearing up for NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Championship
The NCAA Hockey Championship is set to begin tomorrow with 16 schools from across the United States taking part, along with a long list of Alberta hockey players, including two Peace region players.
Zach Okabe, former AJHL Rookie of the Year with the Grande Prairie Storm will be playing for St. Cloud State University. Okabe is in his senior year with St. Cloud and brings a career-high single-season point total into playoffs; putting up 17 goals and 18 assists for 35 points in 39 games through the 2022-23 campaign.
Another Peace Region local will be taking part hoping to get back to this year’s Frozen Four; Grande Prairie-born Brett Edwards, who played his whole minor hockey career in Grande Prairie before moving on to Fort McMurray and Drumheller to finish his Junior A career. He then made the jump to the University of Denver where he won the National Championship last year and is looking for a repeat.
Grande Prairie’s Ethan Edwards is with the University of Michigan Wolverines. Edwards was drafted by the New Jersey Devils.
