Second man sentenced for role in 2019 Sturgeon Lake death

Alberta Justice says a second man has been sentenced in connection with a 2019 death on the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation.

Harlin Martineau was given a 12-year sentence Monday in Grande Prairie court after earlier pleading guilty to a charge of manslaughter.

Credit for time already spent in custody means he has about half of that left to serve.

Martineau and Alan Hamelin were charged after the 2019 death of Barry Goodswimmer.

Hamelin was given a 14-year sentence in October, with five years credit for time spent in custody, after pleading guilty to manslaughter and interfere with a dead body charges.

An agreed statement of facts from Hamelin’s court case says Hamelin punched Goodswimmer and knocked him to the floor while at a house party. He then beat Goodswimmer with a bat and golf club while Martineau held him down.

The two then took Goodswimmer away on an ATV and left him along a trail. Hamelin returned when he hit and stabbed Goodswimmer again, blows that caused his death.

Goodswimmer’s body was found in a marsh.
