Peace Region competitors at Speed Skating Canada event in Saskatoon

Five athletes and a coach from two clubs in the Peace are at the 2023 Canadian Youth Short Track Championships-West in Saskatoon this weekend.

Derian Boechler, Ola Gawlak and Kaley Kadyk from Grande Prairie’s Peace Wapiti Speed Skating Club are all there, as are skaters Leila Cook and June Lynch and coach Owen Cook from Peace River’s Northern Lights Speed Skating Club.

All five skaters competed at the recent Arctic Winter Games. Gawlak won a gold medal at the R U Fast meet held in late February at the Calgary Oval in the Youth 11-13 age category.

There are more than two dozen finals on the schedule, spread over the two days.

Heats start at 8 AM both mornings with races continuing late into the afternoon both days.
