Alberta Health Services adds more mental health support for local youth

Mar 29, 2023 | 3:25 PM

Alberta Health Services has announced the addition of a Multi-Disciplinary Intensive Treatment Services Team (MITS), to help improve access to addiction and mental health support for youth in the Peace region.

This community-based support team will operate out of Nordic Court, and work with youth aged five to 18 experiencing complex mental illnesses and substance use disorders through every step of the recovery process.

Val Daoust, Manger of AHS Child and Youth Addiction and Mental Health in Grande Prairie, said in a release, “This new multidisciplinary team will provide individual/group therapy and counseling, case management/navigation and developmental supports as well as physical and recreational therapy.”

The MITS team is meant to provide intensive treatment and support for youth, from when they first get admitted to a hospital and then throughout their discharge and transition back home, helping families manage their youth’s mental health or addiction needs, with an end goal of reducing the potential for relapse, or readmission to a hospital.

Nicholas Milliken, Minister of Mental Health and Addiction said in the same release, “We’re proud to support much-needed services for young Albertans, delivered right in the community. This is one more step in building comprehensive recovery-oriented systems of care in Alberta.”

Access to the Multidisciplinary Intensive Treatment Services Team must be from a referral by a Youth Inpatient Pediatric Mental Health Unit, or from AHS Community Child and Youth Addiction and Mental Health Services.
