Three Grande Prairie archers, including father-son duo, win national titles in archery

Grande Prairie can claim three national champions in archery.

All three wins came at the Indoor 3D Archery Canadian Championships held over the weekend in Calgary.

Oliver Piepgrass took first in the Male U13 Traditional section.

Chase Martin took the title in the Compound Unlimited category while his dad Rick Martin won the Masters 50 gold medal.

Chase says it was exciting for both of them to come home with the gold.

“It was exciting to win by myself and then for him to win gold in his class as well is pretty cool.”

Rick says it is “really special” to do this family.

“I’ve been shooting with both my boys over the years and Chase has carried on in a very competitive Unlimited division. He’s been very successful, so it was really nice to win one in the Canadian championships and have him win as well, so that was quite special.”

Chase says he has been competing in archery for as long as he can remember.

“I always hear stories from my dad and how he had a stick bow in our hands when we were growing up as kids in the house. I can’t remember that far back but I’ve shot since as long as I can remember.”

Rick says Chase also won a grand prix held at the end of nationals.

“It was quite emotional for me. I know it sounds a little bit crazy being he is 27 years old, but it’s one of those things that never gets old.”

Both Martins have won at nationals in the past. Rick adds Chase was also on Team Canada in 2019.

The three were among a group from the Game Country Archers that competed at the national competition.

Rick says it is a “great showing” to have three members of the Game Country Archers win national titles.

Chase says anybody can get into archery and it has been going quickly. He says anyone who wants to try it is welcome. Anyone interested can check the Game Country Archers Facebook page.
