RCMP cleared after ASIRT investigation into fatal shooting in Grande Prairie

Apr 3, 2023 | 2:37 PM

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has cleared RCMP of any wrongdoing in a fatal shooting in Grande Prairie that happened in December 2020.

A 12-page report from ASIRT says the two members involved were “acting properly in the execution of their duties,” adding there is no evidence of unreasonable or unlawful conduct.

The report says that on December 8, 2020, police got a call about a domestic disturbance at a gas station. Reports said at the time that it was in the area of 100 Street and 132 Avenue.

A caller said a woman was being assaulted in a truck by a man.

Police parked behind the truck when they arrived at the scene and activated their lights. A man then got out of the truck and put a gun to his head.

He did not drop the gun when told to by police, instead calling someone on a cell phone.

He was told to drop the gun several more times before lowering it and firing it in the direction of the officers.

Both Mounties returned fire. The man was hit several times and died at the scene.

ASIRT says this entire sequence of events was captured on video.

The woman involved had already fled the scene. She later told police she and the man had traveled to Grande Prairie from Brooks with another person. She said the man had been using drugs and had not slept in three days. He had previously talked about coming to Grande Prairie to kill someone. He had also held the gun on her and hit her with it and slammed a door of the truck on her leg.
