Court update: Not guilty verdict in High Level murder, sentence in drug case, preliminary hearing set after baby’s death in High Prairie

Not guilty verdict in murder trial

Alberta Justice says the man charged after a 2020 murder in Paddle Prairie has been found not guilty.

Randall James Cardinal had been on trial in High Level. The verdict came down March 30.

Cardinal was arrested after the September 21, 2020, death of 28-year-old Brett Daniel Sowan.

RCMP said at the time that they were called out just after 7:30 p.m. that day to a Paddle Prairie home.

They said Sowan had what they called “a firearms related injury” and died at the scene.

Both men were from Paddle Prairie.

Sentences for two of four people in 2018 Dial-A-Dope arrest

Alberta Justice says sentence shave been given to two of the four people charged after what was called at the time a Dial-A-Dope bust.

Matthew James Roberti was given an 18-month Conditional Sentence Order after pleading guilty to charges of trafficking a controlled substance, possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of stolen property under $5000.

Alexander Dimitri Kalashnikoff was given the same sentence after pleading guilty to possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of stolen property charges.

These sentences are served in the community.

Charges against Tara Lee Cartwright were withdrawn while the case against Kenneth Erskine is still before the court.

All four were arrested after the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team searched a Grande Prairie home on January 22, 2018.

ALERT said at the time that the organized crime and gang team seized cocaine, GHB, mushrooms, methamphetamine, brass knuckles, a rifle, and $34,000 cash.

The investigation had started in December of 2017.

Preliminary hearing set after death of infant in High Prairie

Alberta Justice says a preliminary hearing has been set for the accused in the homicide death of a baby.

The hearing for the person charged with murder, who we are not naming because of a court-ordered publication ban on any information that could identify the victim, is set for October 31 to November 3, 2023, in High Prairie court.

High Prairie RCMP said at the time that the death occurred on October 6, 2022, at a High Prairie home.

Police said the accused had been running a day home.
