Alberta’s unemployment rate lower in March, national rate holds steady

Apr 6, 2023 | 2:09 PM

Alberta is one of only four provinces to see a decrease in its unemployment rate when compared to February numbers.

According to the latest figures from Statistics Canada, the jobless rate in the Wild Rose province was down to 5.7 per cent in March, compared to 5.8 per cent the previous month.

In a news release, Jobs, Economy and Northern Development Minister Brian Jean said nearly 14,000 more people found work last month in Alberta, including over 10,000 new, full-time positions.

He adds it is encouraging to find that more people are choosing Alberta to find meaningful work.

Jean says the policies that the government has been relentlessly pursuing mean that job creators, entrepreneurs and skilled workers have a home here and can succeed.

The specific numbers for the economic region that includes Grande Prairie and the Peace region have yet to be released.

Nationally, the unemployment rate held steady at five per cent, as Stats Can says most of the 35-thousand jobs added across the country last month were in the private sector.
