NWP, NLC included in province’s plan to expand post-secondary spaces

Apr 13, 2023 | 2:30 PM

The province says the new budget contains $193 million to create 8000 new post-secondary spots in schools across Alberta.

That includes $985,777 to create 80 spots in the Practical Nurse program at Northwestern Polytechnic. There is also $368,587 to create 48 spots in the Primary Care Paramedic program at NWP.

There is also $429,090 for 60 spots in the Post-Licensed Practical Nurse program at Northern Lakes College.

The government says this expansion comes after 10,000 new spaces were created last year.

“We are committed to growing our health care workforce and ensuring we have the spaces available for Alberta’s students to continue their education. The increase in post-secondary health care training program spaces will help address staffing needs and build a stronger health care system for Albertans,” says Health Minister Jason Copping in a release from the province.

The government adds in that same release that money is being spent in other parts of Alberta on new spaces in business, technology, health care and aviation.

The province says it decided what to fund based on available capacity at the schools, demand from students and the needs of employers.

The government’s release, including a video of the news conference where this was announced and a complete list of the spaces being created, can be found here.
