United Conservative Party disputes comments made by Notley regarding GPRH

Apr 13, 2023 | 3:27 PM

The United Conservative Party has responded to comments made by NDP leader Rachel Notley during a stop in Grande Prairie on Thursday.

During a news conference, Notley stated that she had been told by healthcare workers that she met with that the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital has been consistently at or near capacity.

But Scott Johnson, the press secretary for health minister Jason Copping, says AHS tracks stats on a weekly basis, adding that the hospital is consistently 15-20 per cent under capacity.

He adds occupancy at GPRH last week averaged around 82 per cent, with overall occupancy averaging around 84 per cent so far this year, and 85 per cent for all of 2022.

Meanwhile, the two local UCP candidates in Grande Prairie have also released a joint statement.

Grande Prairie candidate Nolan Dyck and GP-Wapiti candidate Ron Wiebe said Notley’s comments amounted to fearmongering, adding that construction of GPRH was subject to constant delays while the NDP were in power.

They add that resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in cost overruns, and local families not getting the health care services they deserved.
