Affordability, defeating the NDP among top priorities for new Grande Prairie-Wapiti UCP candidate

The new United Conservative Party candidate in Grande Prairie-Wapiti says travelling with the man he is replacing got him interested in running.

Ron Wiebe will replace Travis Toews after the current MLA and Alberta Finance Minister decided not to seek re-election.

“During that time, we had a lot of chats, and I liked the way he handled himself during the campaign. When it became apparent that he wasn’t going to run again, we talked about that, and he encouraged me to be the next candidate.”

Wiebe says Toews is the best finance minister Alberta has ever had for getting spending under control.

He adds there are several things he wants to work on, including improving health care, the economy and jobs, affordability, and making sure the NDP doesn’t get elected again.

“We’ve got their bosses in Ottawa and, together with their Liberal cousins, not having a very fond outlook on Alberta, so we’ve got to make sure we don’t ever get them in power again.”

Pollsters are predicting a close race come election day May 29.

Wiebe says the UCP has to “stick to what got us here so far.”

“I’m going to do my best to help Premier Smith and the UCP get elected. We’re not going to take any vote for granted. We just need to work hard and that is what I’m planning on doing is just working hard for the citizens of Grande Prairie-Wapiti and help wherever I can to make sure that we continue to have a UCP government.”

Wiebe has been a businessperson his whole working life. He has also served as a councillor in the MD of Mackenzie and on the boards of Northwestern Polytechnic and the Northwest Corridor Development Corporation.
