LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta has announced funding to help prevent abuse against elders and support victims.

The province said it will provide $7.4 million over three years to enhance partnerships with service providers.

Minister of Seniors, Community, and Social Services Jeremy Nixon said abuse comes in many forms, whether it be neglect, violence, or emotional, psychological, or financial abuse.

“Seniors in Alberta deserve to know that this is a safe place for them to call home,” said Nixon. We are committed to preventing harm against seniors with our partnership with organizations throughout the province. This increase in funding is providing more opportunity to ensure that all seniors can live safe and healthy lives.”

A total of $4.2 million in funding will go to the Kerby Unison Centre in Calgary and the Sage Seniors Safe House in Edmonton. Another $3.2 million will be provided to the Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Council (AEAAC).

AEAAC Chair Shantel Ottenbreit said she is grateful to the government for its funding commitment.

“This funding is key to advancing the Elder Abuse Prevention Strategy, expanding elder abuse services across the province, and ensuring older adults have timely access to services and supports,” said Ottenbreit.

According to the province, Alberta is home to more than 735,000 seniors.
