City to continue to offer low-income transit passes with help from the province

Apr 20, 2023 | 1:49 PM

The City will be able to continue to offer subsidized transit passes to residents living on low-income, thanks to a grant from the provincial government.

The two-year grant, worth a total of $275,349 comes from the Government of Alberta’s Low Income Transit Pass funding program.

Seniors, Community, and Social Services Minister Jeremy Nixon said in a news release that they recognize the importance of transit, especially for those who rely on it to meet their essential needs.

He adds transportation to a job, school, or to a doctor’s appointment is not optional, which is why the government is proud to support the LITP program.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says the funding will go a long way in assisting their efforts to ensure that those in need have affordable transportation, enabling them to access employment, education, health care, and other government and community services, regardless of their income level.

Last year, more than 2,500 people used a City of Grande Prairie low-income transit pass, provided through initiatives such as the Transit Access Program, AISH, and the Explore Grande Prairie Welcome package.
