Grande Prairie murder trial to go longer than scheduled

Apr 21, 2023 | 3:28 PM

A Grande Prairie murder trial will go longer than scheduled.

The trial for Cody Letourneau was scheduled to wrap up today (Friday, April 21) but will continue into next week.

Letourneau is one of the people charged after the shooting death of Kyler Commandeur in June of 2020.

More time is needed to hear testimony from witnesses.

Proceedings were put on hold for several days this week for a hearing on the admissibility as evidence of a statement given to police in September of 2020 by Justin Bishop.

He is serving a prison term after pleading guilty to manslaughter for his role in Commandeur’s death.

The judge ruled that the statement was admissible Friday morning.

Bishop wrapped up his witness testimony Friday.

Under cross-examination by the defence, Bishop said several times he did not remember when asked about events at the time of the murder or if he remembered certain statements he made to the police.

He would say he probably said it since it was in a written transcript but would add he did not remember saying it.

The trial resumes Monday morning.
