Savanna School to get climbing wall

Apr 21, 2023 | 9:00 AM

Thanks to a donation from Saddle Hills County and a training bursary from the Obair Economic Society of Dawson Creek, the Savanna School will feature a rock climbing wall in the gym come the new school year, and an instructor to teach on it as well.

Co-Principal of Savanna School Chris Young said in a news release the whole process started when he saw an ad for a climbing instructor course and brought the idea to County Council on February 14.

“It got me thinking about what it would take to have our own wall at the school, so I presented the idea to our staff hoping for a volunteer to complete the training and Mrs. Starleigh Earl stepped up.”

With help from the training bursary from Obair Economic, Mrs. Earl has logged all her training hours and is now a fully licensed instructor.

Saddle Hills County Council also granted the school $50,000 in financial support for the climbing wall, with SPA Engineering to start construction of the wall this summer.

A tentative date for the new rock climbing wall’s unveiling is set for September at the beginning of the academic year for students.

Savanna School Staff and Young thanked County Council, Obair Economic, and SPA Engineering in the same release, with Young adding; “I want our students to feel lucky to live here and attend Savanna School, so I’m really excited to get our own rock climbing wall.”
