Mercer Peace River completes fibre procurement project

Apr 24, 2023 | 12:16 PM

A milestone has been reached by Mercer Peace River following the completion of its fibre procurement project.

The MPR team says they are thrilled about the completion and celebrated with a ribbon cutting in front of the newly revitalized woodroom at the Peace River site, with many dignitaries in attendance on April 20.

The project was announced in 2021 and transformed the company’s fibre procurement process to create a more sustainable business model and created several new long-term career opportunities.

The project had two priorities:

  1. Revitalizing the woodroom by building a new debarker and wood chipper.
  2. Establishment of Peace River Transport.

The new woodroom features one of the world’s largest debarkers and a state-of-the-art wood chipping facility.

Hardwood fibre procurement at the facility has changed the way MPR operates and their long-term outlook is to end the use of diesel wood chippers on aspen trees in the forest.

They now cut hardwood logs to length to transport to the mill on more efficient, larger 10-axle Peace River Transport trucks which improves MPR’s environmental performance.

It is estimated that by 2050, through the project changes to the facility, fossil fuel emissions will be reduced by 900,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent and sequester 2.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent through forest conservation.

The processing operations are powered through green energy generated onsite.
