Apr 25, 2023 | 1:10 PM

Led by the city’s Indigenous Relations Advisor, City Council has worked with local First Nation and Metis groups to develop a 2023 to 2025 Indigenous Frame Work, which has been endorsed by council.

Mayor Jackie Clayton said in a release “The endorsement of the Indigenous Relations Framework demonstrates City Council’s commitment to our Indigenous community and ensuring their perspective, voice and experience guide our actions.”

In response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action and the Government of Canada’s endorsement of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People. This framework identifies 29 action items, organized into five focus areas, for the City to address to further advance reconciliation and redress the legacy of residential schools in Grande Prairie.

The five focus areas, which are directly connected to an individual city operation, were identified as:

  1. Building Connections
  2. Community Culture
  3. Commerce and Creativity
  4. City Services
  5. Education and Acknowledgment

Clayton said in the same release, ” Council values the importance of being active partners in healing and reconciliation with our Indigenous community members, and we are eager to see the changes that the framework will guide in the coming years.”
