NWP to launch Internationally Educated Nurses bridging program in the fall

Northwestern Polytechnic has introduced a new program that it hopes will attract international nurses interested in working in northern Alberta.

The Internationally Educated Nurses Bridging program will support nurses that have not previously worked in Canada to complete their Bridge to Canadian Nursing certificate.

The program, which will launch in September at NWP’s Grande Prairie campus, was developed in partnership with Portage College, Bow Valley College, and Keyano College.

Provost and Vice President of Academic and Research at NWP Dr. Vanessa Sheane says in a news release that this program “will help maximize existing nursing talent and skills in our region, and provide a timely staffing boost for the healthcare system.”

Meanwhile, NWP President and CEO Justin Kohlman says he is hopeful that these students will come to see all that our region has to offer and will choose to stay once their training is complete, which he adds will strengthen our local health care system.

Interest in this program, which is the only one of its kind being offered in Alberta, has been huge, as it has already exceeded its enrollment cap, with a waiting list as long as 18 months.
