Local school partnerships lead to High School Class 1 Driving program

Apr 29, 2023 | 6:00 AM

A partnership between a local school division and Northwestern Polytechnic has led to the addition of a Class 1 Driving Training School.

The driving school, which will be known as the North Peace Commercial Driving Academy, will offer mandatory entry-level training, and Air Brake Q Endorsement programming.

Peace Region School Division Board Chair, Delainah Walker said in a release, “Each person who completes this program will be able to transition seamlessly into employment and work efficiently and confidently with employers in the local and surrounding areas.”

The Peace River School Division first began this project in November 2022, when it was presented to the Board of Trustees.

Since then, the school has gone through many deliberations from structure, to cost and the effect on the local economy. This could be significant, as the northern Alberta region relies heavily on the transportation of goods, as well as improving high school completion rates.

Walker said in the same release, “By tying programming with current economic sectors, students will be able to see a career within reach and create a pathway for themselves to achieve it.”

The North Peace Commercial Driving Academy is set to start offering programs in the fall of 2024.
