Other highlights from Monday’s meeting of Grande Prairie City Council:

  • City Hall recorded a surplus in 2022. The final operating surplus came in at $2,018,000. Council approved moving this money into the Financial Stabilization Reserve.
  • Council has approved advocating provincially for what is being termed “immediate and sustainable funding” for the Fire Medical Response Service provided by the Grande Prairie Fire Department. Council also asked city staff to look at what amendments could be made to the Alberta 911 Program Standards that make funding from the province contingent on mandatory answer times. These both came at the request of fire department officials that had been made at a committee meeting. A third request for the city to push for the recruitment and retention of paramedics in this region was withdrawn as other things are already being done in this area.
  • Three delegations came to council to ask for funding for events that will be taking place this year. The Grande Prairie Pirates have been given $5,000 in cash plus a $5,000 gift in kind of use of the South Bear Creek ball diamonds to host U13 D and U15 D fastball provincials July 7 to 9. The Grande Prairie Traditional Pow Wow is returning this year for the first in-person edition since 2019. Also, organizers of an event to be held September 8-10 to mark the 80th anniversary of the Italian Campaign in World War II say it has grown and now more than twice as many people are expected to attend than originally thought. The final two requests have been set to the committee level for more discussion.
  • Council also approved a special tax bylaw for residents of Pinnacle. Residents of that neighbourhood pay this tax so they can keep the water fountain at the entrance to Pinnacle. The city says the extra cost is about $12.50 per household this year.
