County of Grande Prairie issues fire restriction with dry conditions and high wildfire risk

May 2, 2023 | 10:22 AM

Over the past week, 150 hectares of land in the County of Grande Prairie have burned, keeping fire crews busy fighting vegetation fires around the clock.

As of 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, the County has upgraded the Fire Advisory issued on April 27 to a Fire Restriction.

A lack of meaningful precipitation and very dry conditions have led to the Fire Restriction.

The towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith, and Wembley are also under the restriction along with the entire County.

Campfires on public land are prohibited during the Fire Restriction, but allows for campfires inside provincial campgrounds and private property. New fire permits are not issued during this time period and existing permits may be cancelled, restricted, or suspended.

The County says those who have an approved permit must follow the guidelines and safe burning practices, including staying on site while burning is taking place. Burning is never permitted when winds reach or are forecasted to be 12 km/h or higher.

Burn piles from the winter should be checked over by residents to make sure they are completely extinguished.
