Fire Restriction

Fire restrictions now in effect for three forest management areas

May 2, 2023 | 2:30 PM

Due to high temperatures and a lack of moisture, Alberta Wildfire has upgraded the fire advisory in the Grande Prairie Forest Management Area to a fire restriction.

Under this restriction, existing fire permits are suspended and no new fire permits will be issued. Safe wood campfires in campgrounds are still allowed, along with backyard fire pits, charcoal barbeques, propane or natural gas appliances, indoor wood fires containing a chimney and spark arrestor, and cooking, warming, and lighting devices. These must all be CSA approved and used as per manufacturer’s standards.

All outdoor wood fires are banned on public lands, including back-country and random camping areas. Fireworks and exploding targets are also prohibited.

As nearly 73 hectares of Grande Prairie Forest Area have been burned by wildfires this year alone, the fire restriction will stay in effect until conditions improve.

There are also fire restrictions in place for the Peace River and Slave Lake Forest Areas. The wildfire hazard for both is rated very high.

The County of Grande Prairie, including Beaverlodge, Sexsmith, and Wembley also has a fire restriction in effect.
