Pirates fastball hosting two big events

May 4, 2023 | 6:00 AM

The Grande Prairie Pirates Fastball Club will be hosting two big events in the next couple months.

The U13 D and U 15 D Girl’s Fastball Provincials Championships are set for July 7-9 at the ball diamonds at South Bear Creek.

It is expected to draw 24 teams from Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and Yukon.

Fundraising Director and Sponsorship Coordinator Rhi Bradley says this will mean a lot of people will be coming to Grande Prairie for the event.

“For those age groups, you can have up to 17 roster players and up to four coaches, so you’re seeing 21 people (per team) plus their families.”

“They’re coming from Calgary, St. Paul, Lethbridge… they’re coming from all over, as well as our northern regions of the Yukon and Northwest Territories. You don’t leave your kids for a week at a time, they come with you. So, we’ll have campers, we’ll have people hoteling.”

Pirates Vice President Jasmine Broad says they are also bringing in 30 umpires for provincials.

“So that is also hotels, meals, fuel that the city will reap the financial benefits of because those people need to come here to make this work. Without umpires, we don’t have a tournament.”

Bradley says this could mean a total of 3,000 people coming here for the provincials.

They will soon start going to the families of local players to be part of organizing committees.

Broad says they will also accept volunteers who don’t have any family playing for a Pirates team.

“We accept all help and are grateful for all help, so if you want to be a part of this provincial committee or anything else that we do, please, reach out.”

The committees will look after several things including; working the gates, selling tickets, working concessions, keeping score, and helping get people around as both sides of South Bear will be used that weekend.

The Pirates will also host a men’s tournament June 16-18, also at South Bear, a tournament that has taken place several times previously.

Bradley says they hope to have 32 teams take part, with some coming from New York state and New Zealand.

Fans are invited to both events.
