The Academy offering free shadow days to GP Students

May 4, 2023 | 12:11 PM

The Grande Prairie Academy is offering free shadow classes for students in Grades four to twelve, interested in attending a sports program next school year.

Paul Therrien, Director of Student Supports and The Academy, said in a release, “This is an excellent opportunity for your child to try out our Academy dance, hockey, soccer, or golf programs, we created The Academy based on the knowledge that a passion for sports or dance can positively drive a passion for education and character development.”

Already, nine of Grande Prairie Public School District’s facilities already carry at least one of these programs, meaning students who want to attend The Academy next year, may be able to stay inside their school boundary, pending on the sport.

All Academy programs are focused on getting students to the next level of their sport, putting a larger emphasis on individual skill development and student growth, which gives kids confidence.

Chris Schmidt, Director of Academy Hockey said in a release, ” Once the kids get on the ice, and start seeing their own growth and skill development, and have fun, that’s the passion that spills over and drives their school day, we don’t worry about wins and losses. Instead, we focus on the individual and making them their best.”

Starting in Grade 4 students can choose from hockey, dance, and athletics. Then in Grades nine to twelve Soccer and Golf are available with a choice to participate in a hybrid program, allowing kids to split their focus between golf and another sport.
