Dunes West wildfire gets additional help, evacuee info session at Evergreen Park

UPDATE: Twenty of the 100 additional firefighters requested have arrived. Also, the information session tonight (see below) is being shown on the County of Grande Prairie’s YouTube channel for anyone who can’t be there in person.

Additional resources have arrived and are providing support to the Dunes West wildfire. Twenty of the 100 additional firefighters requested are in Grande Prairie helping local responders with shift changes, andproviding relief.

Four helicopters with buckets, seven fire engines, and provincial specialists in forestry behaviour and structural protection are attending to the estimated 1,700 hectare fire south of Grande Prairie,

Critical infrastructure such as power, gas, and water lines are being protected by fire crews and air crews provided support on the banks of the Wapiti River on Sunday. Overnight crews worked on hotspot fires and putting sprinklers in place for property protection.

Fire guards are also being established to slow down the fire and remove fuels, with support from County Public Works equipment.

Technical Search and Rescue, RCMP, and Enforcement continue to ensure a secure perimeter around the evacuation area.

Evacuation alerts and orders remain unchanged and in effect.

Evacuees of the Dunes West Wildfire are invited to attend an information session with the County of Grande Prairie officials and members of the Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership in Evaskevich Hall in the TARA Centre at Evergreen Park tonight at 7:00 p.m.

The session will be providing evacuees with a status update on the current wildfire situation. So far over 800 people have registered as evacuees.
